Is public transport available in St John's?

There is a public bus service available in St John's, Mount Pearl and Paradise areas. It's not the best but it works when you know few things. The arrival times might be not that reliable especially during winter, if you miss the bus the next one might be as much as 30-45 mins later. Some routes are really long with frequent stops, so you need to plan ahead with timings. Live data from busses in Google Maps is not reliable at all. They have their own website and online tracking of the individual buses which you should use ( metrobus.com ). You can pay by cash but not with debit or credit cards, there is no ApplePay etc available yet. There is a physical mCard available where you can upload credits online as needed and can be brought from several central locations like Avalon Mall. Is it easy to find a job in St John's?

Overall, Newfoundland heavily relies on personal connections and referrals. It's absolutely normal to drop by a store/company and give your resume to the receptionist or in case of a small business to the owners directly. During high season for tourism there will be a lot temporary hospitality jobs all around the island, again you might prefer to show up and try to reach the hiring manager directly. There are job fairs few times during the year in different locations and some companies have special hiring events. Being connected with the newcomer organizations or technology groups like Co-Innovation Center is also key.

Where do I buy basic things for a new home?

- Use Facebook market place for most of the stuff (even cars) but be smart about who you're dealing with. Check the sellers rating and previous comments etc. - Use thrift stores for literally anything like kitchenware, utensils, tableware, clothing, monitors, printers, lamps, toys etc. You cannot believe how much new stuff is moved around in larger shops like Value Village in Kenmount Rd. - Dollarstore has it all and cheap. Do not waste money online ordering for basic stuff, just get the cheapest and you can upgrade later if you want. - Branded stores like Wallmart, CostCo has different products on sale in different times, so you might want to check first several different stores for what they have and then buy it. - Almost all stores provide discounts on fresh produce on a special corner or cart. When a new batch has arrived they usually discount up to 50% of most veggies and sometimes meat and fish. These are no brainers.

Where can I buy specific Turkish food?

Larger brands occasionally carry few items like Salça, Dolma Konserve, Zeytin, Bisküvi etc. and there are few smaller stores (O'Leary Ave next to Avalon Mall) who have more variety from middle-eastern area. Baklava grade yufka (Phyllo Dough) and milföy like (Phyllo Pastry) can be found in frozen food sections of larger stores.

Can I use my existing driver's livence in NL?

New residents should exchange their license within 3 months of arriving in the province. If you already have a Canadian driver's license from another province, you would just change it to a NL one by paying a fee. If you have a Turkish driver's license, you need to pass an online exam first (relatively easy) and also pass a driving test. You will need your passport, your work permit, and a document showing your local address in Newfoundland and Labrador. Also a recent full-time employment letter/proof from your employer is needed. If you work on a temporary job, the letter also should state the end date of the employment.
