A tragic fire during training exercises at CFB Wainwright, Alberta, has claimed the lives of 4 Canadian Armed Forces members and left dozens injured. As the TS2023 community, we are deeply saddened and mourn the loss of our brave service members.
A fast-moving and violent fire during routine training exercises at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright (CFB Wainwright) in Alberta has deeply saddened the entire country and our community.
On the afternoon of Saturday, October 17, a wildfire broke out on the Wainwright training grounds, quickly spreading due to strong winds and entrapping personnel conducting exercises.
Despite extensive firefighting and rescue operations, 4 members of the Canadian Armed Forces lost their lives, and dozens of others suffered severe injuries. The affected personnel included members of the storied Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) alongside reservists from across the country.
Firefighting efforts continued throughout the night with the support of local fire departments, first responders, and Canadian Armed Forces teams. STARS air ambulances dispatched from Edmonton and Saskatoon evacuated the wounded, while emergency care was mobilized at hospitals in Wainwright, Edmonton, Red Deer, and Calgary. Following the tragedy, flags across all federal buildings were flown at half-mast.
As the TS2023 community, we are profoundly saddened by this tragic loss.
As members of TS2023, we mourn the brave armed forces members we have lost. Canadians and the TS2023 community come together in times of crisis and hardship. The unity, togetherness, and solidarity we demonstrate during these difficult days represent the strongest and most valuable aspect of our community and our nation.
We express our deepest condolences to the grieving families, loved ones, and the entire Canadian Armed Forces community for our fallen heroes who lost their lives while serving to protect our country and peace. We also wish a full and speedy recovery to all injured personnel currently receiving medical care.
